ECIA Posts Latest ‘Channel Channel’ Podcast
David Loftus speaks with FIRST® Robotics’ CEO Chris Moore

Atlanta—The latest episode of ECIA’s ‘Channel Channel’ podcast is a fascinating discussion of the remarkable impact and mission of the FIRST Robotics organization. ECIA President and CEO David Loftus interviews FIRST’s CEO Chris Moore. Chris explains the mission of this inspiring organization, founded 33 years ago by inventor Dean Kamen. He shares some of the astounding statistics: FIRST currently serves over 700,000 students in more than 100 countries, supported by 320,000 adult volunteers. The goal is to inspire the next generation of STEM leaders, innovators, and problem solvers.

This mentor-based global non-profit has programs for students from ages 4-18. Each year, FIRST issues a global challenge, with a theme based on issues of global significance such as climate change, sustainability, green transportation, and much more. The 2022-2023 challenge is themed ‘Innovation Can’t Wait.’ Titled, ‘FIRST ENERGIZE presented by Qualcomm,’ participants will reimagine the future of sustainable energy and power their ideas forward.

After suspending the events for two years because of the pandemic, the robotics competitive program is now in recovery mode, explained Moore. “The pandemic put the mission of the FIRST® community on display. Our students pivoted from contests to using their STEM skills to help their communities respond to the crisis,” he said. “We are emerging into the post-pandemic world more resilient than before.”

“The ECIA Foundation, through member companies, has been very active with FIRST for many years, donating components and supporting the organization’s mission,” added Loftus. “These Robotics events are truly inspiring and the impact on the next generation workforce is incalculable. ECIA is honored to promote the vision: ‘To transform our culture by creating a world where science and technology are celebrated and where young people dream of becoming science and technology leaders.’”
