100 Years of the Authorized Channel

Make history with us!  What's your story? Many companies in the electronics industry are celebrating milestone anniversaries. With a nod to the industry’s start on Radio Row, it is the perfect time to celebrate 100 years of the Authorized Channel and its impact on the tech industry and society.

ECIA is assisting in the creation of a historical document that recognizes the visionaries and founders of our industry, the companies that made a difference, technology, operational advancements, and the Association - which has helped spur the growth and value of the channel.

The Authors:

To accurately write this story, we have assembled a highly regarded group of experienced journalists with a vast amount of industry knowledge.

Overseeing the project is Al Maag, an industry veteran who retired in 2013 as chief communications officer for Avnet. Prior to that, Al was advertising director for Molex. Earlier he was the director of strategic planning at Cahners Publishing and executive director of the Business Marketing Association. Today he is a terrible example of a retired person. Al is the CEO of a small boutique agency Maagcommplus in Tempe, Arizona. Al has also authored two books: “Social Media isn’t Social”  and “The Greatest Game On Dirt” the first historical document of 16-inch softball. He brings an enthusiasm and love of the industry to this project!

“I’ve been involved in dozens of anniversary programs and events for individuals and companies, and felt we could not pass up the opportunity to celebrate 100 years of the channel," said Al.  "To accomplish that task I wanted to surround myself with the most experienced writers in our industry. We were lucky and got the best, Barb Jorgensen as editor- in-chief, Heidi Elliott, Bolaji Ojo and channel marketing guru Steve Cholas will be the team researching and collaborating on the project.”

This team has lived through 3 to 4 decades and the channel's ups and downs. We look forward to creating a significant document that educates  and celebrates our members and that everyone will enjoy!

Barb Jorgensen is the editor-in-chief of supply chain publication EPSNews and has covered electronics manufacturing, procurement and business for longer than she’d care to admit! Barb began her career as a copyeditor with Electronic Business magazine and was promoted to distribution/consumer electronics editor. She then covered the channel for EBN; returned to Electronic Business; freelanced; and re-joined EBN.  In 2013 she founded online supply chain publication EPSNews with two industry veterans—Bolaji Ojo and Gina Roos. EPSNews was acquired by AspenCore Media in 2017.

Steve Cholas is VP Global Business Development for Big Zeta, a company that provides a path to digital transformation for electronics companies through industry tailored customer insights and comprehensive industry knowledge. Steve is a sales and marketing expert with more than 35 years of experience in the electronics industry. He has created successful strategic programs for distributors and suppliers globally. Steve developed industry recognized research (Mind of the Engineer, EET Embedded, Supplier Interface) and was instrumental in establishing & directing many of the industry's global media brand icons such as: EET, EEWeb, Electronic Products, EDN, Embedded, 21ic (Chinas largest tech portal), Planet Analog, EBN, along with all their subsidiary brands.

Heidi Elliott, a marketing communications consultant, is experienced in strategy, internal/external communications development, public relations; social media, executive and crisis communications, branding and message development. Heidi is a veteran of the technology and publishing industries. She began writing about the distribution and semiconductor supply chain industry in the 1990s as a technology editor and has written more than 300 articles related to the electronics industry for publications including Electronic Business and Electronic News with a focus on distribution, supply chain, e-commerce and corporate finance. She also spent nearly 15 years in corporate communications at Avnet, a top technology distributor.

Bolaji Ojo is a veteran business, finance and technology journalist with the rare ability to dissect corporate financial statements. “Bola”, a former Bloomberg News reporter and lifelong media innovator, has been a publisher, media executive, media market analyst and consultant, focused especially on the nexus of politics, technology and the global supply chain. After more than a decade with publications in Africa, Europe and Asia, Bolaji joined UBM Media in 1999 and served as business editor, managing editor or editor in chief at publications that included EE Times, Electronics Buyers’ News and Electronics Supply & Manufacturing magazine. He ascended to group publisher and editor-in-chief for AspenCore, the global technology media organization whose publications include EE Times, print magazines, news sites, online communities and a major marketing presence in Asia-Pacific, Europe and in North America. He is currently Managing Director of Switzerland based Datasights GmbH, a consulting and research firm.

When completed this e-book will celebrate our past and delve into the future! We expect it will pay additional dividends as it is shared with employees, shareholders, and clients. It will be an outstanding document for future industry-focused students and new employees.
