ECIA, through the EIA Standards Council (ESC), provides a unique forum for the development and discussion of technical issues and requirements that drive the manufacture, application and use of electronic component products and systems on a global basis. A dozen technical committees develop American National Standards with a primary focus on passive electronic components and related processes. These industry standards carry the “EIA Standards” trademark and are developed in accordance with, and accredited by, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).
Additionally, ECIA administers a dozen US Technical Advisory Groups (TAGs) that represent and vote for the United States in the development of International Standards created by the global community through the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) based out of Geneva, Switzerland.

ECIA also promotes joint standards development and technical work in cooperation with other standards developing organizations.
- The EIA Standards Council (ESC) strives for a balance of participants in each of its committees from three general categories; Users, Producers, and General Interest in the electronics and electrical industry.
Participation in the ECIA standards programs is open to all individuals who are directly and materially affected by matters addressed by the work.
- The ESC is presently specifically seeking additional participation by the User category. This typically includes, but is not limited to, OEMs, ODMs, Contract Manufacturers, and Electronics Distributors.
